past
It all starts with family, and family meant everything to the Campos. At least this was the case until the eldest son, Aloisio ran away from Hwalla with a denounced satyr. You see there were many arbors in competition in Ulme. Of the best were those of the satyrs and the Campos. They called their vineyard, Levantarse Estate. It was a lush paradise, bursting with good soil and fat, purple grapes. Naturally, when the heir announced that he had fallen in love with the half-satyr daughter of their rival, the parents were less than enthused. Isolated by both their families, they ran away to Tuya hoping for a better life.
They opened a vineyard on the border of Kana and named it El Enemigo. It was not the same as back home but it was enough. Soon after, a son was born. A headstrong, sturdy boy. Lorenzo or 'Enzo for short. Followed shortly by a smaller boy. Nicoli or Nico as he was better known.
In giving birth, their mother had passed. She was harvesting in the fields at the time and was too far from the home. They found her, shaded under the grapes vines, and Nico swaddled in a slave girl's arms. Aloisio did his best to raise to the boys on his own. They often were a handful for him but he did the best he could. He taught them to be men. Perhaps at too young of an age. While Enzo had his father's tact, Nico seemed to have his head in the clouds and often enough a book in his hands. With what little money they had, they scraped together enough to send Nico to school in Tissam.
Within the keen stones of the city, Nico studied philosophy and moreover the implications of morality. How society classified justice and goodness. What at time was deemed social acceptable. The basis of what he learned was that everything was temporary and historically, right and wrong drifted with the wind. With this there was one subject he could not seem to wrap his head around. Slavery.
Within the current system, slavery was a means for refugees. Those fleeing from war, hardship, and persecution their only reprice would become a slave? How could one choose between death or losing their freedom? And truth be told, Hanami as a whole would be the one who suffered. Some of these refugees could be doctors, tradesmen, builders, or painters. And where were they going to use? Scrubbing floorboards and cutlery. He couldn't abide by this. After one two many heated arguments with his professors, Nico left his studies in a fury and headed back home.
Upon his return, Nico's father was furious that he had left and at all happy that his son had wasted an opportunity of education. Begrudgingly, Nico joined his father and brother in the fields. It was then that he noticed how secretive the two had become since he had been away. They were jumpy for a start and taking long walks together at night. Something didn't add up so one night, Nico followed them. What he discovered was that his father had been harboring illegal refugees and finding ways to transport them to Anhu. The network was called The Canal.
At first, Nico was furious that his family would keep something like this a secret from him, especially when this was the thing he was most passionate about. Turns out, his father had been doing it for years. He was hoping that he could offer his son a better life without the danger that this work entailed, but knowing that his son could not be kept away, he was brought into the circle.
Enzo taught his brother all the trade routes and ways to get past the rangers. Where to pick up and how to shepherd these people to a better life. They were called Ferrymen, as the Campos brothers used waterways and cave networks to move slaves. From there they would make contact with the abbeys in Anhu and deliver them to the priory brothers. It was a hard road, but Nico would do his part to make things right.
