"I don't know how many times I've told you, but you don't have permission to step outside the gold sector."
Jae-ha pulled a face at the guard's reply but he stubbornly stood by the golden gate, trying to peer around the guard to catch a glimpse of Haru's silver sector. But somehow, even with his highest insoles, he couldn't see an inch over the armoured beasts. If only he could slip past them, he wondered how many he would be able to get past before getting caught... These guys must be pretty slow with all that heavy armour sooo if I run as-
He stopped mid-thought. Actually, this wasn't a good idea. One guard would probably suffice to catch Jae-ha and Jae-ha had already counted eleven guards posted at the gate. And as he was still struggling to keep up in the sparring class for the children, maybe Jae-ha was a little behind the level of a fully fledged guardsman.
But all was not yet lost... He still had another option left. If he could whine loud enough and for long enough, there was the slightest possibility that they might take pity on him or he could annoy them enough for them to cave in (slightly more likely).
"Why are you doing this to me? I'm the Empress'-""Whatever you are to the Empress, it still stands that there has been no change in your status. So no matter how long you stand there and complain, you are not leaving the sector."
It was too sudden for Jae-ha to even have a chance to retaliate. He pouted. It just wasn't fair. He was an adult now, surely he could go wherever he wanted to? He must have been able to show one of the House officials that he was mature and responsible enough to leave the gold sector?
He didn't even want to go that far. Just to see what was being sold in the silver sector or meet the travelers who would stop by the famous inns and bars in the bronze sector? If he was feeling really brave- just up until the river and dip his feet in. Although he'd rather do that with someone else to hold his hand... He didn't want to get swept away by the currents.
But no, it seemed that would all be part of a world he wasn't allowed to be a part of. He gave up arguing with the guards fairly quickly after that. He had been stood there countless times, having the same conversation. And though this was his first attempt since turning eighteen, the hope that he could get out on the basis of being able to make his own decisions as an adult quickly dissipated. He wasn't getting out anytime soon without an agreement from the Khan House.Holding back a tantrum, he trudged to his favourite place to spend his spare time- the local bakery. He walked through the familiar streets, dragging his feet along the floor. He briefly reflected on how sad it was that he would be able to direct someone to the bakery from anywhere in the sector and tell them almost exactly how many steps it would take them.
Stupid guards... He'd talk to Aliyah when he got back to the palace. There would be no way that she would want him stuck up here as well anyway. She'd sort them out.
"Jae-ha! What brings you in today, want to try some freshly baked goods?" Jae-ha nodded. Sweets would make him feel better for sure. The baker looked up, concerned at the lack of response from Jae-ha. "You wanted to leave again?" Jae-ha gave no response to the second question. He kept his gaze fixated on the floor.
"Hey, the gold sector isn't all that bad, is it?" "No, it"s not that bad. In fact, there's nothing bad at all. I would know, wouldn't I? Since I know every building in this area. It's amazing in fact, that there are some people who know so little about this place. Since I'm stuck here, I might as well start giving tours and earn some money on the side! Then at least I could do something productive with all the time I spend here. So anyone who wants to know all the useless details about the city just come to me." Jae-ha started out on a more level tone but had somehow attracted all the attention in the bakery by the last sentence.
As soon as he realised, his ears turned bright red."Sorry for disturbing everyone. Please carry on-" He gave a polite bow to the customers and the owner. open | 776 words

notes here. words: 432 | Malia was bored. It was a rare thing, but it did occur. Lately her whole life had been campaigning with the houses to win approval for her sister, the empress, and so on the rare moments when there was no campaigining to be done, or court to be circulated, she felt empty and at loose ends. She'd wanted to study but found herself too mentally exhausted and hungry to bother. The servants were already busy with the various chores that had swamped them recently, a prank by her twin gone bad, leaving a mess in the dining hall, so not wanting to bother them when they were busy the young imperial grabbed a bag of coins and headed out for some food.
Settling into a nearby bakery was of little challenge. She knew where to go that wouldn;t make a huge fuss over her title and instead just greet her and offer her their best selection of sugary and baked goods, exactly what she needed to get her brain back on track and ready for more studying and socialising, she was begenning to wonder wether her life would be anything more than that.
That's when her meal was interrupted by the sound of what could only be described as a minature rant from the speed and length of the monologue. Looking over and setting eyes on the perpatrator however, was a bit suprising, Song Jae-ha, 'the palace goldfish' as many called him, though amongst the imperial family he was known as something much less flattering, a political prisoner, an heir held captive to keep his house under the influence of the Empire.
That wasn;t to say Malia ever agreed with his status. She believed in the art of charm and diplomacy, and when those two were done right, political prisoners like the merboy were unnecessary. So whenever she saw him, she did her best to be kind to him, he seemed blissfully unaware of his circumstances and that was good, heavens know the truth would hurt him.
When he slunk away from the spotlight inadvertantly created from his rant, Malia abandoned her food in favour of consoling him. He was much older than her, and they weren;t paticularly close, but her sister was fond of him, and thus, so too was Malia.
"Hey there, getting a little cramped in the gold sector?" she asked gently with a smile. She couldn;t help him escape without scandal, but she could at least offer the older boy a sympathetic ear where he clearly needed one.

Jae-ha was already hurrying for the door, gaze fixed on the floor in embarrassment after fishing out several copper coins to pay for his food. He hoped to escape without causing trouble but as he was leaving- he felt the presence of someone following behind him. Their footsteps were unnaturally fast and he assumed they meant to catch up with him. He had his head bowed instantly as he prepared a quick apology for disturbing whoever it was. The type of people who frequented the gold sector were usually nobles and other people of high status. Many of whom, he knew wouldn't hesitate to scold a serving boy who had spoken out of term... and who may have accidentally insulted the kindness the Imperial House had shown him."Hey there, getting a little cramped in the gold sector?" "Excu-" That was not what he had expected. His eyes snapped up to see who it was who had run after him- High status indeed- he couldn't help but let out a small squeak as his eyes met those of none other than Princess Malia. She smiled gently at him whilst Jae-ha gawked back in surprise. It took several seconds to collect his thoughts before he remembered his manners and gave a full bow to greet the Princess. "Excuse me Mal- I mean, Princess. It's just I was a little surprised to see you here. What are you doing here? Are there guards nearby?" He looked around for whoever was currently responsible for Malia but failed to recognise any of the faces of the people around him. Should he look after her? Was the Princess allowed to be here? He knew her to be a much less free-spirited and well-behaved than her sister. She probably would have sought permission to leave instead of just going like Aliyah had done with him many times... But it surprised him that there was nobody else around to keep an eye on her. It just then registered that she must have heard his rant and he suddenly felt all the more embarrassed. He considered denying it entirely but he knew neither Princess- young as they may be- were not idiots. She didn't seem too angry with him- so he guessed there wasn't going to be a punishment this time around. "I'm okay really. It's probably just tiredness mixed with a little too much stress from all the work recently that has me a little worked up." He gave an awkward laugh, rubbing the back of his neck as he explained. "Thinking about it, it's not really as if I can complain about being stuck here out of all the places in Hanami. Not after, all that you're family has done for me." He had just about convinced himself now as well that he didn't really want to leave the palace. Everyone who mattered to him were the people who needed him here. "But umm- thank you for asking. I do appreciate it- did you want me to buy you something from here maybe?" He offered as a sign of his gratitude. ae-ha nodded. Sweets would make him feel better for sure. The baker looked up, concerned at the lack of response from Jae-ha.

notes here. words: 487 | The young imperial couldn't lie and say she wasn't amused by the sheepish nature of the young boy before him. To look at him you would think he hadn;t been raised here as her sister's best and really, only, companion. But perhaps when he was not with her or her sister he was treated more akin to a servant, and thus was skittish and afraid of his 'betters'. Still, he hadn't fled from her despite his obvious desire to do exactly that, and odd behaviour aside, she'd take that victory. This would be a good opportunity to distract herself with the one thing she knew how to do.
"I told the guards I was leaving, they couldn't come because they're busy wrangling in my brother right now, he let loose one of his pranks in the great hall and it had....explosive effects. So since the servants were busy cleaning and I was hungry, I just decided going out to eat in the district would be fine," she explained casually with a chuckle and shake of her head. Her brother she could tolerate and even love. Sure he was vastly immature compared to her, but they were children, they had a right to be childish, she just hoped he grew up into a good man, and learned from the example she was doing her best to set for him....and their sister.
After she was finished talking though, she simply stood and watched him a moment. She felt bad for him, really she did. A young lord being raised as a servant was something from children's books, and should never occur in real life. But it was impossible to simply return him while his mother still lived, and that meant no one outside the Gold sector could see his face.....but maybe she could bring the silver and bronze to him, without ever leaving gold.
"Don't apologise, you've done nothing wrong. You're tired, and hungry, and probably sick of my brother and his pranks, so don't ever apologise for that...we all get sick of my brother sometimes," she offered gently with a smile. Then she turned around and approached the counter, making a quick order for some of their most sugary baked goods, and placing a bag of coins on the counter as payment as they got to work before turning to Akira with a shy smile, looking perhaps more unsure than she'd ever been.
"You are more than welcome to say no if you like, but if you really are okay with it, I'd like to take you to my favorite place. As a twelve year old going on twenty, I know stress, and how to deal with it, and i'd be happy to show you my secret spot if you like?" she asked gently glancing out the window. The palace was a no no, but there were alot of high spots in the gold sector, maybe the temple?

"I told the guards I was leaving, they couldn't come because they're busy wrangling in my brother right now, he let loose one of his pranks in the great hall and it had....explosive effects. So since the servants were busy cleaning and I was hungry, I just decided going out to eat in the district would be fine," Jae-ha felt a pang of remorse for everyone on duty and even felt slightly guilty that he wasn't there to help. He decided it was best for him not to comment at this stage. Although he was sure House Khan was well aware of the trouble that Khari caused for the maids and servants, it was still not in his place to bring it up.Actually just thinking of the mess and the chaos that child could stir up, relief that it wasn't something he had to deal with quickly replaced his guilt.
Besides, leaving Malia by herself to wander around the gold sector still didn't seem like a good idea, no matter how many guards had to be deployed to wrestle Khari under control. Whatever age she felt like or acted like, it took some reminding that she was still only twelve."Well it's probably not a good idea for you to be out on your own, as well-behaved as you are so it looks like you're stuck with me for now." He laughed softly as he voiced his concern and his solution to the problem. He was slowly beginning to feel his posture relax in the princess' presence. "Don't apologise, you've done nothing wrong. You're tired, and hungry, and probably sick of my brother and his pranks, so don't ever apologise for that...we all get sick of my brother sometimes,"She wasn't wrong... was he even allowed to admit that much? "I'll just stay silent and you can take that however you will," He gave her a playful wink. He trusted at this stage she wasn't going to tell on him... but given she was so close to the court, it was best to make sure-. "But even so, it's not so much about keeping this from the head of discipline- but it would be great if we didn't have to let him know. I'm sure you know deep down how thankful I am to be in the service of such a charming family." He said in a cheerful tone, hoping to brush everything off as a piece of harmless fun. Hopefully move onto another topic of conversation."You are more than welcome to say no if you like, but if you really are okay with it, I'd like to take you to my favorite place. As a twelve year old going on twenty, I know stress, and how to deal with it, and i'd be happy to show you my secret spot if you like?" "A secret spot? Really? You're sure I've never been there before? Even after hearing my rant?" He questioned, an amused smile crossing his lips. It was very sweet of her to think of him like that- she was a court favourite indeed. Intelligent, well-mannered and undeniably adorable. There were times Akira felt most of the Empire's problems would be solved by everyone just coming to meet the Khan House for themselves. Not only that but the idea he might have an extra inch of the gold sector to explore had him very excited.
"Okay, okay I'll come along. But! If I've seen it before then you have to buy us a snack on the way back to the palace. If I haven't been there, I'll pay. Deal?" He asked her, sticking out his hand for her to shake.

The cheeky grin could not be repressed from Malia's face when Akira started talking. It was one thing when other people started sucking up to her, trying to get in on her good side, it was boring and dry, but she had to sit through it and be flattered. But this boy was just so cheeky and sarcastic that it managed to breathe new life into what he was saying, and somehow, despite the fact she knew he was partially sucking up to save his arse from trouble....she was the farthest from annoyed she had ever been in recent memory.
"Very well, I suppose i can tolerate your company, it would be pretty abnormal for the heir presumptive to the throne to run about unattended, though much more fun, my brother may be trouble, but there's something to learn from the way he lives life, wild and free," the words were mostly joking, but there was a stragness to her eyes, jelousy most likely, and anyone who knew the twins could easily tell. One twin had to grow up too fast, while the other was far enough from the throne he was free to live life as he pleased, no one would be presumptuous to assume the princess held a mix of resentment along with the love for her little twin.
Shaking her head she grinned challengingly at him. Of course he knew the grounds as they were commonly travelled. But did he know the secret alleyways, the ledges and passages her twin had shown her, and in this case, it may just help her win a bet. Not that she needed the free food.
"Alright there mister, you've got yourself a deal, BUT we're not travelling the boring route, so uh, get those land legs of yours ready to climb!" she declared happily as she moved toshe his hand firmly, and then not let go as she dragged him back towards the palace and looked upwards with a grin.
"Okay, so I know you don;t want to be at the palace right now, but i promise, where we're going, you won;t even recognize as the stiffy imperial sites you're used to.....this is Khari and my special place, believe it or not, when he's not blowing stuff up or running from his tutors...he's got some good points," she explained, all sisterly pride and affection as she led him toward an old, and likely forgotten passage near the back of the great hall. It was easy to enter and exit unseen since the maids were all busy mopping and scrubbing the floors of....some type of goo and the guards were minimal, likely busy chasing after the escapee prince.
From there it was a mess of directions, Malia herself only knew it from repition by her brother, time and time again leading her here. The halls were dusty, and reeked of musty old castle, but there was room enough for the young princess to keep a reasurring grasp on the mermans hand as she led him up a flight of stairs before finally ending in what seemed to be a forgotten tower.
Finally releasing his hand Malia was quick to throw open the windows. Unlike the rest of the palace, this place was furnished. Though it was obvious it was the twins who had done the interior designing. Toys, books, and knitting all scattered about the floor, as well as some silk blankets and cushions that most likely made up 'emergency sleep supplies'.
"I know you're not always happy here, neither am I, so I don;t blame you. My sister and my aunt won;t allow me to smuggle you out of the gold district for freedom though....so, instead of bringing you to the silver and bronze district....i'll bring them to you!" she declared with an overdramatic flourish as she flung the windows open. Indeed, though old, the tower was placed rather nicely for seeing as much as possible of the capital districts, though obviously you could see less and less as you got further out, you could still see a little bit of each, a little bit of color inside a bland cage.
"I know it's not much, but there's beds, and I could probably get some kind of pool for you set up here, and either myself or my brother always smuggles food up here once a week. So when the palace walls close in on you, and you feel like you're gonna scream if you don;t get some air....you're welcome here," she explained softly, and though her back was turned, the tone of her voice, and the nervous fidgeting of her hands at the hem of her dress, suggested the princess may have been planning this for a little while.

"Alright there mister, you've got yourself a deal, BUT we're not travelling the boring route, so uh, get those land legs of yours ready to climb!" A short sigh got caught in Jae-ha's throat. It wasn't that he didn't like fun things. They were definitely better than boring things... but he struggled with legs a little more than he cared to admit- despite having used them for almost his entire life. There was just something inelegant and gangly about the way he looked and indeed, moved on land.
But Malia was twelve. He could keep up surely?
"Aye aye captain!" He chirped, squeezing her hand slightly as she held onto it. And let himself be led through the streets as he was half-dragged in a awkward blend of a skipping-running-power walking.
"Okay, so I know you don't want to be at the palace right now, but I promise, where we're going, you won't even recognize as the stiffy imperial sites you're used to.....this is Khari and my special place, believe it or not, when he's not blowing stuff up or running from his tutors...he's got some good points," "You sure about that? I've lived here all my life as well, I'll have you know. That's what? Six years I have on you. It'll take something pretty special for me to get you dessert" He gave her a playful nudge.
Truthfully, he was starting to believe that it was a place he wouldn't know at all. Aside from following Aliyah when she went off exploring- which was usually cut short by Jae-ha falling behind and subsequently getting lost- he had rarely gone anywhere where he had no business in the palace itself. It would rarely end well for a servant to go snooping around where they weren't supposed to.
By the time they had gone through so many twisting paths, stairs, and all sorts- Jae-Ha was completely out of breath. He tried to keep up so Malia wasn't pulling him along too much- frail thing she was. But Jae-ha wasn't any fitter and stairs were definitely not his friend.
"Ok... Okay- you got me Malia. There's- de-definitely... a reason that I haven't been h-here yet." Jae-ha said between breaths as she let go of his hand and hurried to the other side of the room.
He looked up as she opened the window, blinking as the light suddenly poured into the room. The room was suddenly brought to life. It felt as though he was dreaming- after all the tattered and dreary halls they had taken to get here. Could such a room exist? He looked with curiosity at all the trinkets, toys and books scattered over the floor. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the excited gleam in Malia's eyes. He smiled warmly, hanging back for a second as he watched her hop around the room more comfortably than he had ever seen her.
It felt a bit like he was trespassing when he took a step towards her. He could see how much it meant to her from the proud look that Malia had as she revealed it to him. It was all hers. Hers and Khari's. A little patch of warmth and seclusion from the grandness and coldness of the life they led. He wandered around the room, pausing to look at pictures sprawled on the floor, skimming through the pages left open of various books lying around and picking up a few toys and hugging them tightly under his arm.
He stayed quiet though, not quite sure what words were appropriate for this moment.
"I know you're not always happy here, neither am I, so I don't blame you. My sister and my aunt won't allow me to smuggle you out of the gold district for freedom though....so, instead of bringing you to the silver and bronze district....I'll bring them to you!"
He looked over as she made her announcement and walked over to the window. He stuck his face out, breathing in the cool air and taking in all the sounds of the city, that seemed even more distant than usual.
From there, he could truly see everything. He saw the bakery they had just come from, steam still furiously puffing out of the small chimney as customers came and went. Then leading out of it was the main road- along which families and businessmen were travelling back towards the gate. He recognised a few of the guards, even from this distance. He watched all the people, the stalls and the activity of the silver sector. Still following the road further down the hill, he reached the bronze gate and gazed in amazement at a world so close to him and yet something so strange and new.
But further still, he caught sight of something that he remained fixated on for a while. A lone ship sailing down the river towards what must be the Saran Sea. The water sparkled in the sunlight and in that moment it looked so calm, relaxed and gentle. He didn't know how to explain it but a part of him wanted to be there so desperately. "I know it's not much, but there's beds, and I could probably get some kind of pool for you set up here, and either myself or my brother always smuggles food up here once a week. So when the palace walls close in on you, and you feel like you're gonna scream if you don;t get some air....you're welcome here," Perhaps it was from the day's events, or maybe it was from the view but something moved Jae-ha to the point that he suddenly realised he was trying to blink away tears.
He didn't quite realise what he was doing but he found himself on his knees a second later, wrapping his arms around Malia as he held onto her tightly. He tried to hide his tears from her by somewhat burying his face into her shoulder. But he failed to hold back a sob and started to realise he was staining her dress with his tears.
"I'm not unhappy here. I promise you I'm not. But- ah, I don't know how to say it umm... thank you. Nobody has done something for me like this. It really is a beautiful view." He pulled back slowly, wiping his nose on the back of his sleeve as he gave a sniff. He gave a small laugh between all the tears. "I'm so sorry, look what a mess I am just looking outside. It's probably for the best I don't travel much!"

notes here. words: 470 | Malia was nervous. Very nervous. She didn;t need to win the bet, she could pay for the meal, even if he ate alot of food. But she'd wanted so badly to show him this place, to offer him some freedom and solitude from what must have been such a cramped life. He always insisted he was fine, but then again, so did she, and heaven knows she rarely truly meant it. So she had wanted to help him, to show him a safe spot, even if it was a long walk for a fish, she wanted him to know that somewhere in the palace, he could be safe.
But what if he didn;t like it? What if he thought she was childish? What if, like so many nobles must already think, he was just humoring her because she was a child, and a superior that they had to obey? Just like the nobles all stood at attention when she spoke, maybe he was just humoring her?
Then she found herself wrapped up in a tight hug, and while she'd love to say he was the only one crying, in truth, she was too. Relief, joy, acceptance. They were wonderful feelings, and things she so rarely got to feel. She wrapped her arms around him tightly and held on as if he might dissapear. She couldn;t remember the last time she had felt so warm and safe, definately not since father died.
"This is nothing, i'm just bringing you into my world, a world that by rights I should have allowed you into long ago I just.....worried you might not like it. Like sure, everyone can call you a servant, but to my sister and I you're....you're family, and I need to stop holding the rest of my family at arms length," she admitted quietly with a weak chuckle as she looked at one of the books left open on the floor.
That was probably more than she should have said, she was saying and doing so many emotional things. It wasn;t smart, or practical. But she couldn;t help it, perhaps it was getting to her, this empire buisiness. But soon it would be over, she knew what she had to do, and these emotions were just her fear and nervousness for the future coming out into this moment.
"Sorry, i'm probably saying alot of weird things and freaking you out aren't I? I'm just....alots happening, or will be happening soon, and I think it's gettinng to me. Not that I don't mean what i'm saying, but still, if my emotions are weirding you out, i'm sorry, i'm just overwhelmed...but i'm happy....i'm really happy you're here...with me," she admitted quietly with what some might call a sentimental and affectionate smile.
But surely not, this was the imperial princess we're talking about! multiply life by the power of two |

Born as the heir to the Sumuri realm, Akira was once the pride and joy of House Oshima. Anything he wanted was his and he was lucky to have a family who loved him deeply. The wealth, the luxury and attention- it's all part of a life he can't even remember now. He's been living a much more modest life as Song Jae-ha, one of the serving boys under House Khan. He was taken into service ever since he was found washed up on the shores of Aevon after an unfortunate accident which separated him from his mother. Unbeknownst to him, he has been used as a leverage against House Oshima countless times. He has worked hard all his life within the palace and has never suspected of being anything more than a very fortunate servant to the crown. He has never been allowed to go beyond the innermost sector of the capital, and as a merman he is limited to the pool in his room- earning him the nickname of "The Palace Goldfish". He now works as the personal servant of Empress Aliyah.

Not that I don't mean what I'm saying, but still, if my emotions are weirding you out, I'm sorry, I'm just overwhelmed...but I'm happy....I'm really happy you're here...with me," Blinking through his own tears he saw that the princess had started crying herself. He kept her close by, rubbing her back slowly to help calm her down as well. He was a mess himself but there was no use with both of them breaking down like this. He could hold it in a little while so they both calmed down... or he hoped he could.
When she finished he looked down at her, and gave a soft laugh as he brought a hand to her face, gently using his thumb to wipe away the tears running down her cheeks. "Come on now princess, we can't have both of us bawling our eyes out like idiots now." He gave a half-hearted laugh.
He waited a few seconds, picking up one of the dolls he had previously collected and gave it to Malia to squeeze, although he was more than happy to donate his arm if she wanted to stay by his side.
"Now listen here Malia-" He said, looking at her with the same soft eyes but his voice carried a seriousness to it now. "I don't want to hear you talking about "rights". Your family has done so much for me already that there's nothing you owe to me and everything that I owe to you. By rights- I shouldn't have private quarters or the job that I have or my own pool, it's all because of your generosity. So don't you go around feeling sorry for every serving boy you see- we're well-cared for. You have your own problems, struggles and you need to focus on making sure you're safe and well before you move onto others."
He held out his pinky. "You don't ever have to be sorry or worried or anything other than what you are around me. But you shouldn't ever think that you need to look after me as well. Don't ever apologise to me after all you've done. Can you promise me that?" He asked her, seriously worried for her well-being behind the tough facade she put up. He didn't quite understand why she did feel so apologetic towards him but he just wanted her to look after herself before she tried to take care of others.Especially in a position as tough as the one she was in.
"Now what's all this about keeping your family away, do you struggle to talk to them? Shall we do a big group talk with your siblings- well, not me, I don't think I quite fit that well in- but the three of you? Would that solve anything for you?" He asked. There shouldn't be secrets in a family- was that right? He wasn't so sure but he felt it certainly wasn't a good sign if the family that the empire rested on was having internal conflicts.

The second child and youngest daughter of House Khan. She is something of a rarity among the women of Hanami , the second woman in a row to rise to prominence in the imperial household, after her aunt. Despite some physical limitations she is a bright, capable young woman, devout in her faith and confident in the somewhat archaic, traditional ways of her family.

notes here. words: 609 | Malia laughed in spite of herself as he spoke. He was right though, to any outsider that saw them they must have looked like a mess. Clinging to one another, with their vast height differences and crying like babies, when nothing even remotely bad had happened! This was a happy event, a bonding moment, and they were crying, perhaps malia wasn't the only one who struggled to keep it together sometimes. She didn't know if that was true, but it was a nice thought.
Still, she was taking this moment for all it was worth as her tinier hand came up to grasp his larger one firmly. His skin felt soft, smooth and nice, not unlike her own. It reminded her, again, of the birthright they robbed him of. A birthright she would grant him once more, but one that would take time....and hopefully, when the truth came out, they could still be like this.....whatever this was.
Perhaps it was what having a real friend was like.
Though she took the doll to be nice, she just tucked it under her chin, his arm and his hand were all she wanted. She knew well the feel of leather on skin, her dolls were fine, but they lacked the warmth, and the gentle kindness, of her new friends touch, so as long as he was willing, she didn't intend to trade down.
Still, when he started speaking of how blessed he was, she wanted to cry. He was a prisoner, a brainwashed one at that, who didn't know that by birthright he was equal to nearly any man in the palace and he deserved so much better than to be hidden away.
She locked her pinky with his and looked him straight in the eye. He was so kind and gentle. He was far more family than the majority of her relatives, except for Khari, he was the first one to actually see her. Not the spare to the throne, or the key to taking down her sister, he just saw her as a child.
"I cannot promise that exactly, but i will promise to try. I don't like to make promises I might break without intending to, so this is something I can definately upkeep, to try and be myself around you and not worry about you," she agreed softly with a sigh before giggiling as he questioned why things were so strained in her family.
"It's not that abnormal, that's how royalty is. My sister was isolated with her lessons, and even when I snuck in to attened them, it was only to learn them for myself, not to get closer to her. My aunt is away all the time with the military, and that's just how life is, our different paths made it so that none of us could truly ever get close....it's sort of just how things are. We can work together when necessary, but we're not some big happy family.....that's,"
'that's the one thing I wanna change when I get married' was what she thought, but knew better than to say. Happiness in marriage was just chance, these things were politicol, that's what concubines and the like were for. But somewhere deep down, she still dreamed it.
"Okay, now it's my turn, I made a promise to you, now you make a promise to me. When we get married, to whoever, we'll do our best to change that. No more distant families and messed up children, we'll prove that no matter your station, you can have a happy family.....even if we still don't know who either of us will marry," she admitted with a laugh. multiply life by the power of two |

»»————- ♡ ————- ««"I cannot promise that exactly, but i will promise to try. I don't like to make promises I might break without intending to, so this is something I can definitely upkeep, to try and be myself around you and not worry about you,"
"I guess that's a start but thank you. You're all very important to me and I want to make sure you'll take care of yourself physically and mentally!!" He chuckled. She was indeed a politician in the making. It was only ever around these people that Jae-ha never did hear the simple answer the question required. She was so small and sweet though, it baffled him how she could already be better with words than he was. He really should have paid a lot more attention in his own classes... ."It's not that abnormal, that's how royalty is. My sister was isolated with her lessons, and even when I snuck in to attened them, it was only to learn them for myself, not to get closer to her. We can work together when necessary, but we're not some big happy family.....that's,"
As she trailed off, Jae-ha gave her an encouraging squeeze. "Hmmm... well in that case, I think the best option for you is to give them a big hug every time you see them. Hugs are the solution to so many problems-" As if trying to prove a point, he wrapped his arms tight around her playfully, pulling her closer towards him as he did so. "-And maybe it's best just to imagine hugging them if there are lots of big boring bossy people around." He chimed as an after-thought.
"Okay, now it's my turn, I made a promise to you, now you make a promise to me. When we get married, to whoever, we'll do our best to change that. No more distant families and messed up children, we'll prove that no matter your station, you can have a happy family.....even if we still don't know who either of us will marry,"
Jae-ha didn't really know what to think about the suddenness of the demand. He blinked, sporting a blank look on his face. He had never thought about marriage let alone promise about conditions of his marriage. He gave the princess a nudge- "Eyyyy- you're not trying to tease me are you?"
"I know for a fact that there'll be young men lining up for miles to get a chance to dance with the beautiful- the talented- the smart young lady you are. And then there's a significantly shorter queue to live with me in my little pool with not a lot of options for a holiday and an awful smile." He joked around, but he was honestly a little taken aback about the sudden question about marriage. He trusted that whatever happened, Aliyah would let Malia marry whomever she will out of love. And of course it would be a man worthy of Malia. Jae-ha was... another case- but he still saw no reason to be worried about marriage now..

notes here. words: 320 | Malia couldn;t stop from smiling, a reaction he seemed to bring out alot in her. But she was glad for it, just like Khari made her smile, Akira did too. Did that mean she thought of him like a brother? Probably and that was good, it'd be nice to have an older brother and all, she'd just never considered the possibility, sure Akira had always existed in her life, but before today, they'd never really had a chance to bond.
He thought she was strange though.
It was to be expected, even in the culture she grew up in, twelve was still considered to be too young for marriage. Possible, yes, but not preferable. But these were not preferable times, and her early marriage would be the only thing that could prevent the empire she cherished and saw herself as responsible for from falling apart.
"Are you not aware that to be a part of the nobility or royalty you must be declared insane?" she teased playfully with a sigh as she let him pull her close and curled her tiny little fists up in the folds of his clothes. Sure she liked to act powerful and in control, but she was just twelve, and here, alone with him, she didn;t mind being just a little kid for a bit, a weak moment so she could face the world stronger than ever before and wipe the problems off the map.
"I'd live there with you. You're nice, you let me be twelve and not twenty, you take me for who i am and....well you may not necessarily like me but you tolerate me," she murmured, though it was unclear wether the words were teasing or not, it would seem obvious the pair liked each other given that one clung and the other squeezed close.
But maybe, for her, never speaking in definates was just what kept her from being hurt. multiply life by the power of two |

»»————- ♡ ————- ««"Are you not aware that to be a part of the nobility or royalty you must be declared insane?""Crazy or not, I still love you all for who you are" He whispered softly in reply, a small chuckled escaping as he thought just how complicated and ridiculous the world of nobility and royalty was.
"I'd live there with you. You're nice, you let me be twelve and not twenty, you take me for who I am and....well you may not necessarily like me but you tolerate me,"
"I can just about tolerate you but I'm not so sure. I guess we'll just have to find out after I buy you cake some other time. For now, I think I can speak for both of us when I say that I don't want to face the chaos outside any time soon." He murmured, keeping his voice low as he let the silence take over. It was a feeling of peace and serenity he rarely felt outside of the water. But with Malia safely curled up against him, the view of the river and the sounds of the city so far away from him- he let out one big exhale.
She was so small and so fragile and though Jae-ha was no warrior, he felt strong in that moment. It was like his embrace could keep out all of the awful things people said to a mere twelve year-old. He didn't understand it, why and how people could be so selfish and mean- but he knew it wasn't right.
But right now it was quiet. And it was warm with Malia here. And he was just happy. Happy to be there, happy that there were good people in Haru who cared. And he hoped Malia could also share in that happiness. "I'll look after you Malia, even when you don't want to admit it. We can just sit here like this and I'll understand everything. You don't have to say anything."
And just like that, they sat and watched the day pass by in silence, words no longer needed. Jae-ha's eyes never leaving the sight of the great river.
