Born as the heir to the Sumuri realm, Akira was once the pride and joy of House Oshima. Anything he wanted was his and he was lucky to have a family who loved him deeply. The wealth, the luxury and attention- it's all part of a life he can't even remember now. He's been living a much more modest life as Song Jae-ha, one of the serving boys under House Khan. He was taken into service ever since he was found washed up on the shores of Aevon after an unfortunate accident which separated him from his mother. Unbeknownst to him, he has been used as a leverage against House Oshima countless times. He has worked hard all his life within the palace and has never suspected of being anything more than a very fortunate servant to the crown. He has never been allowed to go beyond the innermost sector of the capital, and as a merman he is limited to the pool in his room- earning him the nickname of "The Palace Goldfish". He now works as the personal servant of Empress Aliyah.

Jae-ha was swimming lazily around his pool, very vaguely keeping track of the how long he had spent swimming by counting every lap he had done. He was currently keeping himself entertained by seeing how many anchovies he could get to follow him round the pool. It may not have seemed very interesting when Jae-ha was trying to explain the game to other serving boys and girls but he had felt increasingly invested in training all his anchovies to recognise him as their leader. It seemed like something he should achieve given the amount of time he spends here. And surely that would be an amazing party trick to have under his belt, no?
They say parents can't pick favourites. But Jae-ha had a definite preference for the anchovies that stuck close by. That counted for just over half of the 150 (ish) anchovies he had by now. He couldn't really keep a track of individuals so he just counted his favourites as one collective and his almost-favourites as a separate one.
He hadn't meant for them to grow so numerous but he couldn't tell which were girls and boys and thus couldn't keep them in separate tanks. Besides, a part of him was also reluctant to split them up because he might split up a loving family in the process. And he didn't want to make them sad...

He wondered if he was tall for a mermaid-
Was tall the right word? Maybe it was long for mermaids since fish aren't tall? Or maybe his tail was long and his body was tall? Either way, he gathered that there were no such things as insoles for merfolk to add a few inches to his height. Maybe fin extensions were a thing? But nevertheless, it worried Jae-ha for when he did go outside the palace. He liked being the same height as the others now. He didn't think he wanted to go back to being the smallest again. Too many people can push you around.

He hoped Aoi would be able to make it today. It had been a nightmare making sure that the guards would let him pass given all the chaos surrounding Aliyah's birthday. But it wasn't as though everyone wasn't already familiar with his face, surely not with the amount of evenings that Akira had asked for him to come anyway.
"80"
Do anchovies see merfolk as fish or people?
"81" Do they still recognise him when he sheds his tail?
"82" He hoped he hadn't lost too much money today after his trip into town (it seemed luck was never on his side when he stopped to play chase the lady on the streets-) because he had a lot of questions to ask Aoi when he got there..

"Even if you're far away, I can feel you" The palace, for want of a better word, was in uproar. Tightly run ship that it was, it was a quiet, well-ordered sort of uproar, one which bubbled beneath the surface rather than ran rampant for all to see, but it was still uproar. To an outsider, it might have gone completely unnoticed but to Aoi, who visited the palace frequently enough to consider himself au fait with the palace’s workings, hints of it were everywhere as he made his way through the maze of corridors towards Akira’s rooms. It was there, hidden in the tight smiles the maids shot him as they hurried passed with arms full of linen, in the harried way the guards waved him through the gate without so much as a suggestive comment, in the tension which seemed to hang in the air like sea mist, blanketing everything in a slightly panicked haze and making Aoi’s blood thrum with a strange kind of nervous anticipation. Honestly, he could only imagine how Akira must feel, cooped up in the palace as he was. Surely, if Aoi (who had only been in the palace a few minutes) already felt so tightly wound any small touch could cause him to snap, Akira must be even more on edge... That or the young mer had somehow managed to completely ignore what was going on around him, a feat Aoi certainly wouldn’t put passed him; Akira was supremely gifted at preserving his own sanity, even it didn’t always look like it from the outside.A faint sound jolted Aoi from his thoughts, just in time for him to realise he had almost reached his destination.“79” As Aoi drew closer to Akira’s chambers, he heard the distinctive sound of Akira’s voice, coming from within.
“80” He seemed to be…. Counting?
“81”
Hopefully he wasn’t trying to count his anchovies again. That hadn’t gone too well the last time he’d tried it and Aoi wasn’t sure he really wanted to relive the experience. His dreams had been plagued by swarms of anchovies for months and Takumi had laughed at him when he’d had to explain why he’d woken up screaming three times in a row.
“82” Please let it not be anchovy counting.
Steeling himself, Aoi raised his hand and knocked on the door.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee~~
Jae-ha jolted upright a little too quickly as soon as he heard the knock on the door, sending his anchovies scattered in all directions at the sudden movement.
"Sorry~" he apologised quickly, trying to reach out to pet one but it swam away before he could reach it.
But he was too excited to really care about his anchovies for the time being. He skimmed the surface of the water, ready to hop out and open the door for Aoi- before realising that he had no legs.
Oops.
Apparently it was not appropriate for him to use up the oil from the kitchens so he could poor it on the floor of his room to slide around on his stomach (even though he cleaned it all up himself). It really hurt to move along the stone floor without wetting it... and he didn't want to splash water in case he accidentally sent one of his anchovies flying out of the pool.
He realised, in that case, he probably should have thought to tidy up before he grew his tail. There were several dirty clothes strewn across the floor, his bed wasn't made and there were some dirty plates he had slid under the dresser from the pool (which he hoped Aoi wouldn't see since they were pretty well hidden). Luckily he had enough flower petals, incense stick things and salts to mask any smells.
...He was certain that Aoi went to friend's houses that were in much worse condition. But he still felt a little bad.
"Come in!" He called anyway. Aoi wouldn't notice for sure if he kept him distracted. As soon as the door opened, Jae-ha put on his brightest, most innocent smile.
"You took your time today! It's okay though, I imagine, it's pretty tense out there with everyone running around for party preparations." Jae-ha rambled on as Aoi made himself at home.
Keep him engaged in conversation... he won't say anything-
"Did you come from far today? I'd say it looked like you traveled okay but then again, I don't think you ever look bad so it's hard to tell." The merboy continued, partially carrying on his plan to subtly distract Aoi but he did take genuine interest in all the things Aoi did, where he went, the kinds of people he met and- like any good friend- how he was holding up.
